10. Conclusions and future IS developments

10) Conclusions and Future IS Developments

This paper demonstrates that a large number of IS activities and functionalities can be executed within the Project. Very useful outputs will be generated by TCPD in future; data will be collected and processed in a professional way. The technology as described here, is appropriate for the future and for TCPD.

Financial and human resources are the most critical preconditions for the Project’s successful implementation. They require close attention and monitoring, to make sure the IS also sustainable for the future.

It has been shown that this is only the start of a structured, technology-supported IS. More features will be available in near future. Stronger data relation and sharing facilities with the other LSAs will guide to the allover coordination through NLIS.

More and better trained manpower in future will enable the development of more applications and leads to better understanding, what the LIS can offer. The dissemination of LIS output will also reach – and influence – the District Assemblies, one of the main customers of the LIS.

Better bandwidths even in rural areas of Ghana will give better facilities, to have an integrated network, with Districts, Regions and HQ having their functions and carrying out their mandates professionally, but strongly on-line linked to each other.

Accuracy of mapping will improve and get close to the meter-level with better GPS technologies, international cartographic conventions being applied by all agencies (including projections and datum, see Annex 1), and better, i.e. easier-to-handle and cheaper, scanned images of low-flying carriers. This will enable the monitoring on regular intervals, i.e. the control if the approved land use plans are being implemented and controlled on the ground.

Also the GIS software will change: The trend is towards
Maps API with more commonly shared datasets, which are accessed by a new software generation, very often through the internet. This will give the responsibility of data availability and accuracy to the source agencies in a real-time approach.
