3.8 Move Entire Vector Map

Level of expertise required for this Chapter: Beginner; general Map Maker training

In the process of georeferencing, it might be necessary to move (or ‘shift’) the entire vector map by a given distance, to make a better fit to a base map (or to GPS readings).

1. You calculate the distance the map has to be moved horizontally (in W or E direction) and vertically (in N or S direction). See also Chapter 5.3.6 (Shift a Raster Map) for the procedure to calculate shift distances in meters.

2. In Map Maker:

Load the layer to be moved to the live layer, and zoom out:
Right-mouse > Project manager window: Add layer > Select folder and file > Open > Copy layer to live layer > OK > Zoom out 2x (bottom right at vertical bar).

If you move a long distance in relation to the current display, you might have to move out more than 2x.

Main menu > Edit > Live layer rubber sheet > Show vector rubber sheet > Rubber sheet manager window: Enter the horizontal and / or vertical distances (in meters, see above). You can also rotate (‘revolve’) by a given angle (in degrees). Leave the other fields untouched. In this example, the map will be moved 20 m to the West, 50 m to the North > Apply rubber sheet transformation permanently.

Check the map: Look if all labels are close to the feature, or inside the polygons. If not, you have to place them inside by:
Still in live mode > right-mouse > Live layer actions > Basic operations > Ensure polygon labels are inside > OK

Don’t forget to save (
right-mouse > Save live layer as…), recommended at a new name.
See also the following Chapter 3.9 for the procedure to move one or more selected unit(s) on a map.
